Too large and you may find you tree
becomes waterlogged and it's roots
start to rot.
Make sure your ceramic Bonsai pot
has enough drainage holes and ensure
that the pot is the right size for
your tree. The last thing you want
is a massive Bonsai pot and a tiny
tree, likewise, a small Bonsai pot
and a large tree will look just as
silly.
It's also worth noting that your
ceramic Bonsai pot should not be
glossy on the inside. These types of
pots will be inappropriate for
housing your Bonsai. A pot with a
glossy interior is much more likely
to effect drainage and effect heat
loss to such an extent as killing
your tree.
A ceramic Bonsai pot that is glossy
or glazed on the outside is fine.
However, it's prudent to pay close
attention to their quality, as
cheaper pots that are glazed may
crack during the cold winter months.
Some good tips to consider when
choosing a ceramic Bonsai pot.
If your Bonsai is relatively mature
and established the less decorative
the pot the better. The more
intricate and decorative the tree is
the more neutral and plane the
colour should be. However like
anything to do with the art of
Bonsai nothing is set in stone, you
should therefore choose a ceramic
Bonsai pot that appeals to you and
is likely to be well suited to your
Bonsai tree.
As for the overall size of your
ceramic Bonsai pot. As a
general rule of thumb, buy a pot
that is about as wide as the largest
branch and about a deep as the
bonsai trunk is wide.
Obviously at this stage the trunk of
your Bonsai tree is unlikely to be
very thick, so make sure you
consider extra growth when making
your final selection.
